Best business case for diversity
For the firm management that has recognised that encouraging diversity and equality is not a PR ploy, but provides real bottom line benefits.
2003 WINNER

Ed Smith, Sarah Churchman, Jackie Gittins and Emma Appleby of PwC
We applaud accountants PwC’s efforts to install
a true culture of diversity. The need for senior
executives to connect with others across the
firm and to display an appreciation for the
diverse has been inextricably linked. Surveys are
conducted quarterly to measure effectiveness of
a broad array of activities and focus groups.
Employees are openly rewarded for exemplary
behaviour. We were particularly impressed by
the degree of personal support provided to
individuals. Furthermore, PwC made great
efforts to share with and learn from other
organisations. In so doing, we believe PwC has
secured a position of competitive advantage.
Finally, we are heartened by their ability to
provide employees with insight into the
opportunities available outside PwC to “give
back” to the wider community.
RUNNER UP
Particular mention must be made of the efforts made by DLA to instil a culture of diversity into their firm. Special focus has been placed on working with partners and associates to convey the business case in a language that has real meaning for them.
Beginning with the legal requirements, DLA has eloquently defined the full meaning of diversity in an effort to clarify the benefits of diversity from a wider social and personal perspective. Moreover, DLA has extended its practices to include the full value-chain of business stakeholders, from clients, to suppliers and beyond.
Finally, we were particularly impressed by the links DLA has made between diversity practices and improved recruitment, retention and morale across the firm, all of which is neatly linked to its status as a desirable employer in its field.

2003 SPONSOR

Persuading the MPF to include a Best Business Case for Diversity category in its Awards has been a major achievement for The Paul Nicholls Bursary Award. The charity was formed in 2001 in memory of DLA partner Paul Nicholls, known to many here tonight, to promote diversity and equality in professional firms.
